Magpies Laundry was founded by Surrey based Textile designer Lucy Portsmouth. She started her journey with her grandmother, a talented lady who knitted, sewed and crocheted, and embodied the make-do-and-mend philosophy that inspires Lucy today. Over the years Lucy has carried on sewing, building up her knowledge and skill through practice and experimentation.

Lucy specialises in creating unique pieces of textile art that are for everyday use – cushions, quilts, lavender pillows, bags, corsages and other home and personal accessories. All of her creations are all made from recycled and vintage fabrics, costume jewellery, buttons, beads and other found objects.

Magpies Laundry connects the past, when textiles were expensive and treasured, with today's sustainable sensibilities. Reclaimed, refashioned and repurposed, Magpies Laundry gives that ethos a contemporary, relevant twist.

There are so many memories caught up in garments – from that collection of baby clothes you couldn't bear to part with, to your wedding dress still in its cover hanging forlorn in the wardrobe, to the gorgeous pullover with a tiny hole that you still love. Too precious to throw away, they wait, hidden away in boxes and cupboards, neglected and unloved ….

Lucy is happy to take on commissions and loves to create unique pieces for you from your own store of precious fabric, be it your baby's clothes, your wedding dress, evening dresses, granny's old linen or even old suits! Alternatively, she is able to create anything from her existing range as a bespoke order in particular colours or fabrics as required.

Lucy exhibits her work at various craft fairs & exhibitions throughout the South and she can be found at the Inspired Craft & Gift Fairs from time to time.
